Poetry

Where Time Stops

Where time stops:

At twilight in the arms

Of my beloved

Singing octaves of love.

At sunrise running wild

With a flock of autumn leaves.

By the sea counting stars. There is one

For every creature who has ever lived.

Where time stops:

At the scene of galloping horses

Steaming and spraying surf along the beach.

Flying around the moon—free

Like a bar-headed goose

Over the Himalayas loving life.

Where time stops:

Strumming this old guitar.

As the strings slip out of my fingers, I listen

To melodies trilled into the air by the ships calliope.

Ah, it’s the Natchez! One of only two true

Steam powered sternwheelers plying the

Mississippi River today.
